There are many ways for you to get involved with Cancer Research UK and make a difference for the future.
Whether you choose to raise funds for cancer research by hosting a breakfast during Britain's Biggest All-day Breakfast, join a sponsored walk in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, or donate your time to one of our Cancer Research UK shops, we value your contribution to our charity.
You can help us raise money for research into cancer whilst making new friends and learning new skills.
People from all walks of life volunteer for Cancer Research UK. Whatever your skills, interests or experience we need your help raising funds for our vital research. We will make sure you receive all of the training and support you need.
Cancer Research UK is a diverse organisation that welcomes volunteers from all ethnic groups.
Here are some ideas about how you can volunteer with us.
Shops
Our shops are amongst the most successful on the high street. With nearly 700 shops across the UK, there is sure to be one close to you. If you are looking for a career in retail, Cancer Research UK shops are a great starting base.
We always need help with sorting and processing stock, merchandising and serving customers. Also, we often need local drivers to pick up donated stock from people who cannot get to the shop.
Shop volunteers enjoy being part of a team. They are able to meet new people and learn new skills in a role that can be tailored to suit their individual availability.
Fundraising in your area
Many thousands of people give their time by choosing to organise fundraising events in their local communities. These can range from events such as coffee mornings and quiz nights to sponsored races and dinner dances. Some people enjoy organising big events such as balls or sponsored walks.
We have hundreds of local fundraising committees and groups that are always looking for new supporters. If there isn't one in your area, you can always start your own with family, friends or colleagues. Or if you don't want to start a group, why not organise a one-off fundraising event?
However you decide to raise funds, we will support you with advice on organisation and publicity and supply you with materials to assist you.
Events
Our National Events department organises sponsored events right across the country, including our highly successful race for life series of runs for women. Raceforlife 2002 has 100 races planned in towns and cities throughout the UK. Such events always need volunteers to help on the day with things like participant registration and medal presentation, as well as handing out water to the runners taking part.
Office
Volunteer in one of our offices by helping with mailings, filing, computer work and other administrative tasks. We have many offices across the UK where you can gain invaluable work experience. Our London offices can provide rewarding opportunities in departments such as Communications, Finance and Marketing.
Cancer Research UK has 685 charity shops across the United Kingdom.
The income we generate through our shops is vital to our research into the prevention and treatment of all forms of cancer. We sell a variety of donated goods, from the latest fashions for the family to the hidden treasures in our bric-a-brac department. The majority of our shops also carry a selection of new goods ranging from fragrance oils and candles to a line of exclusive giftware.
Each shop is run by a manager and is supported by a team of volunteers who generously give their time to help us. If you would like to join one of these teams, please contact your local shop.
More than one in three people in the UK will suffer from cancer at some point in their lives. Cancer will almost certainly touch the lives of every single staff member in your company.
At Cancer Research UK, our doctors and scientists are finding new and effective treatments for cancer. Cancer Research UK is the largest independent cancer research institute in the world, funded almost entirely from voluntary support.
We would like to work with you to help our scientists continue their vital research. At the same time, we hope to make a positive contribution to your business. Together we can work to cure cancer faster.
A corporate partnership with Cancer Research UK will benefit your organisation in many ways:
- Your brand reputation will benefit through association with the world's largest independent cancer research institute. 86 per cent of consumers agree that they have a more positive image of a company if they see it is doing something to make the world a better place (Business in the Community 1996 'The Winning Game').
- You can build an emotive bond with your stakeholders. According to research, charities concerned with cancer are considered by the public to be the most worthwhile (NOP/Mintel 1997).
- Joint promotions can impact positively on your bottom line through endorsement of your brand by the UK's biggest charity.
- Through employee fundraising we can provide a focus for team building and staff motivation.
- Our experienced team of corporate fundraisers will offer you appropriate support and ensure that our relationship runs smoothly.
- Our large team has expertise in all aspects of corporate fundraising, cause related marketing and corporate social responsibility.
- Our team of dedicated corporate fundraisers and cause related marketing specialists, based both in London and around the UK, will help you implement all types of fundraising campaigns, ensuring that you always receive the level of support that you are looking for, wherever you are located in the country.
- Our team of national and regional press officers specialise in maximising the value of positive press and PR for our partners.
2002 is a particularly exciting year for us. Not only are we seeing important developments in our scientific pursuits, but are also taking our events programme to a new level.
We really do have something for everyone, so join us individually or get involved with family, friends and colleagues. You'll be guaranteed to have a great time while raising funds for our pioneering cancer research.
We need your help. Register to take part in an event today and make a difference for the future.
