Cancer Research UK is a new charity with a mission to conquer cancer through world-class research.
Cancer Research UK was formed on 4 February 2002 as a result of the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
We are now the largest volunteer-supported cancer research organisation in the world. With a dedicated team of 3,000 scientists and an annual scientific spend of more than £130 million – raised almost entirely through public donations – our aims are to:
- Cure cancer patients faster
- Cut numbers of people getting cancer
- Bring better treatments to cancer patients
- Train more cancer doctors, nurses and scientists for research
- Be the authoritative source of information on cancer
- Maximise resources available for cancer research
Cancer Research UK is a new charity which was formed on 4 February 2002 as a result of the merger between The Cancer Research Campaign and Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
This new organisation is founded on a long track record of collaboration.
Imperial Cancer Research Fund and The Cancer Research Campaign began life as a single organisation, The Cancer Research Fund. Founded 100 years ago in 1902, the organisation was renamed Imperial Cancer Research Fund two years later. Imperial Cancer was the first independent institute in Europe devoted to cancer research.
In 1923 a group of doctors unhappy with the lack of clinical relevance of some of the organisation’s science broke away to form the British Empire Cancer Campaign for Research (BECC). In May 1970 this finally became The Cancer Research Campaign. The Campaign’s approach was to bring research closer to the patient by taking it away from laboratories and into hospitals and other institutions.
Since the 1970s, Imperial Cancer Research Fund and The Cancer Research Campaign have collaborated scientifically. This cooperation culminated in January 2001 when the two organisations first began to discuss the possibility of merging.
Today, Cancer Research UK is the largest volunteer-funded cancer research organisation in the world and has an exciting future ahead. Our scientists now know more than ever about cancer, so we have a wealth of new ideas to explore and projects to fund.
Although the name Cancer Research UK is new, history has in fact come full circle: this pioneering organisation will begin life by celebrating its 100th birthday.
Cancer Research UK supports and undertakes a comprehensive programme of research in institutes, hospitals, universities and medical schools throughout Britain and Northern Ireland.
We are the European leaders in anti-cancer drug development and our extensive programme of research ensures that new treatments reach patients as quickly as possible.
Our clinical departments contribute to improvements in treatment for adults and children with cancer. We also carry out research into the causes and development of the disease. This research underpins the design of entirely new approaches to treatment and prevention.
Through research into the genetic and environmental basis of cancer we hope to identify those people at high risk and to examine the possibilities for reducing that risk and preventing cancer. Another priority is the development of screening for the early detection of the disease.
We aim to improve the wellbeing of patients through research into the psychological impact of cancer and to improve communication between doctor and patient. We provide authoritative cancer information and guidelines for general practitioners and promote cancer prevention through education and research. We also have a commitment to train the next generation of cancer scientists and doctors.
